  Beyond the Basics

Have you already attended an initial methodology programme and would now like to do something more? Are you looking for something beyond a Certificate level course which would enhance your career? Have you looked at the new DELTA Diploma and found that it is intended for teachers of adults? Are you mainly interested in teaching children and adolescent learners?

CELT Athens has been running advanced Diploma courses since 1989. Since the changes in the Cambridge Diplomas structure which resulted in the cancellation of the Diploma for Overseas Teachers of English, many teachers have found themselves unable to attain a qualification beyond certificate level in Greece, simply because they have had no opportunity, or desire to teach adult classes (the new DELTA Diploma requires such experience and examines issues related to adult teaching contexts).

The CELT Athens Advanced Diploma in ELT is the course which provides you with a high level qualification  with a focus on teaching younger and adolescent learners.

Course content
The fist part of the course covers "core" studies in Teaching English as a Foreign  Language including thorough coverage of various theories of teaching and learning, development of the four skills, teaching vocabulary and phonology as well as an excellent grounding in grammar theory and practice.

The second part focuses on catering to the needs of different age groups and levels as well as on teaching specialist courses; sessions include teaching Business and Academic English (ESP/EAP), teaching Young Learners and Adults, using Literary Texts and teaching through Drama.

Who is Eligible to attend
The course is suitable for teachers with substantial teaching experience ( a minimum of two-three years) and some previous training at certificate/introductory level who wish to develop their professional awareness and skills of teaching English to a high level of professional expertise. Applicants are accepted on the basis of qualifications, experience and an interview with the Director of the Courses. A language and methodology pre-course task is normally required for entry.

Assessment & Certification
Course assessment is on a continuous basis. Participants are assessed through Teaching Practice and Materials Design Project Assignments. Successful participants will be awarded the CELT Athens Advanced Diploma in TEFL, a mark of a high level of professionalism and experience.

Course Options:
There are three course options currently offered at CELT.

  1. A 30-week ( 8-month) course which prepares candidates for the written examination in June or December. Sessions are held twice a week on weekdays a.m.
  2. A 10 intensive weekends option. Sessions are held approximately once per month (all day Saturday & Sunday).
  3. A 60-week (16-month) option with one session per week a.m.
  4. An intensive course completed over 7 weeks in the summer.

The above options do not include Christmas, Easter holidays and summer breaks. It should be noted that the centre usually runs one or, maximum, two of these course options every year based on demand.

As you will note, some course options are more suited to candidates living in Athens or nearby towns (option 1 & 3), while other options are also suited to out-of-Athens course participants who cannot travel to Athens as frequently. Current out-of-Athens course participants come from Patras, Pyrgos, Edessa, Aigion and we even have one candidate from Germany!

About the centre
CELT Athens has an excellent reputation as a teacher development centre. The high quality of instruction is recognised and respected not only nationwide - many foreign language centres will give preference to  teachers  trained at CELT - but also internationally. Many of our ex-trainees have used CELT Athens Certificates to find jobs in various countries around the world, including the UK and the US.

a highly specialised lending library with a wide collection of practical teachers' handbooks on methodology, theoretical books on Language, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics as well as an up-to-date section with published materials for the classroom.

a unique Teachers' Self-Access Centre with self-study material to enhance and expand on the material taught in the seminars. This material is also available on the web for registered students (password protected)

a website specially dedicated to the Diploma trainee with access to the internet so that they can find materials, lesson plans, articles and links to study at their own pace (also password protected) .

Links to other courses
If course participants later wish to sit for the RSA/Cambridge Diploma examinations, academic credits are transferable to that programme, i.e. candidates will not have to attend all the input sessions but only those relevant to teaching adults although attendance of a number of group and individual tutorials is obligatory. Transferred candidates will naturally be required to meet all entry and assignment requirements applying to those registered on an RSA/Cambridge Diploma course.

The course is also excellent as preparation for the ASEP examinations.
