Demanding but Fun!

       

Aims of the Course
The CELT Athens Certificate Course in Teaching English to Young Learners is a highly practical methodology course introducing teachers without previous training and/or experience to the principles and techniques of teaching and learning a foreign language to young and very young learners. No classroom teaching experience is required for acceptance on this course although a high level of English is expected.

Qualification it leads to
The course aims to provide participants with a solid foundation for effective teaching and further professional development. On completing this course, participants are expected to be able to prepare and teach lessons based on their assigned coursebook as well as to be able to adapt and supplement it for the benefit of their learners where appropriate.

The Certificate Course in Teaching English to Young Learners is assessed in order to supply teachers and their prospective employers with evidence of professional competence in language and methodology. A Certificate of Attendance and a Letter of Attainment are awarded to participants who have completed their assignments, participated in Teaching Practice and submitted a coursebook based Project Assignment.

Since its inception it has provided certification for native and non-native TEFL teachers and school owners with a Certificate level qualification which has gained the respect of employers and colleagues. It is a course highly recommended by Foreign Language Schools in Greece as a minimum prerequisite for entry into the profession.

Since CELT Athens is a Cambridge/RSA Diploma centre Recognised by UCLES (University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate) and included in all its lists, Certificates provided by CELT Athens are accepted as evidence of training throughout the world.

Course  Organisation
The course comprises 100 hours of Seminar input, Workshops, Teaching Practice, Classroom Observation, and Self-Access work to ensure maximum coverage of the syllabus and opportunity to use techniques learnt in sessions. In addition to the topics listed, course participant can choose from a list of elective subjects, thus negotiating, in part, the content of their course. Please read the focus of each session in the next  column.

In addition to the seminars and workshops the course also includes

  Teaching Practices in Schools
   School visits and observation of experienced teachers
   Self-Access Materials Package for further reflection and consolidation of the content
 
Free Library Membership 

A part time option is offered during the academic year starting in October, January, March or April. Sessions may run weekdays or Saturdays.

An intensive four-week option is offered in June, July & September.

Requirements
All candidates for this course should have completed their secondary level education and be at least eighteen years of age. Selection of participants is determined through a pre-course language task and interview with the Director of Courses. Non-native speaker participants should hold a recognised Certificate of Proficiency in English.

N.B. The pre-course task can be sent to candidates by fax, e-mail or can be taken on the web. In order to be given access to the task, participants should confirm payment of a $50 non-refundable deposit.
