Mentors Needed for trainee teachers

CELT Athens is looking for mentors for the teachers attending methodology programmes such as our Certificate Course in TEFLthe Certificate in Teaching English to Young Learners , and other programmes.

You can participate if your school is in Athens but we also need mentors in other towns of Greece since we have many trainee teachers coming into Athens to attend part-time courses (for example, a trainee from Patras coming in every Saturday will be looking for a mentor there rather than in Athens)

If...

  1. ... you are experienced and have attended at least a basic methodology course such as the Certificate Courses above

  2. .. you are a trained teacher whether at Certificate or Diploma level

  3. ... you are a Director of Studies or Foreign Language Centre owner interested in quality teaching

  4. ... you are an experienced teacher working for a quality institution and welcome the opportunity to help novice or prospective teachers

  5. ... you see this as an opportunity to develop further as a teacher yourself

you are eligible to participate in this programme                            Teaching Practice at   CELT Athens

The trainee who is assigned to you will take on the role of 'apprentice teacher' and should be given the opportunity to..

  • observe you while preparing for your classes

  • help you in your preparation by choosing or designing activities according to your specifications

  • find or create audiovisual aids which you will be using in a lesson

  • observe you teaching for a number of class periods during their apprenticeship

  • be allowed  (always under your supervision) to teach your classes for a few minutes at first (implementing one or two activities). more later up to one class period - when it is of course convenient for you.

The role of mentor can be taken by the director of studies or a senior or experienced/trained teacher with the qualifications mentioned abobe

Why you are invited to participate

Our trainees usually find mentors on their own from a list given to them at CELT. Many foreign language centres are pleased to accept these trainees and give them the opportunity to acquire the experience of how professional teachers work and function within the context of a quality institution. Apart from benefits to the trainee teacher, the mentoring institution also benefits in many ways.

  • You are given the opportunity to meet new teachers some of whom you may find suitable for future collaboration.
  • The trainee can function as your teaching assistant, one with enthusiasm and many new ideas who will be delighted to help you with your lesson preparation.
  • Through the mentoring mentoring scheme you can motivate your existing members of staff to prepare more and to develop as teachers - this is a normal part of being a mentor
  • Participating schools will be given acces to a large database of trained teachers when looking for new teacher.

For more information please contact CELT Athens, either via email at  celt@celt.gr , or by phone 210 3302406.
