Cambridge ESOL will be launching this examination in Greece around May  2006 but details of TKT examination centres will be announced in early 2006.

The short preparation course organised by CELT Athens aims to help you get through the three different examination papers successfully and is organised around the three modules mentioned in the next column:

It should be noted that this course length and content is appropriate for teachers who have already attended a methodology course such as our Certificate Course in TEFL and aims to revise and build on this knowledge with a view to being able to deal with the tasks in TKT.

The course is 30 hours and is offered in a variety of modes: part-time or full-time, over one intensive week or even over a number of intensive weekend sessions. For forthcoming course dates and tuition fee details please click here.

Who can attend this course
Anyone, whether trained or untrained is welcome to attend this course but it should be noted that those who have already attended methodology courses will be more likely to get the best out of its content.

Tuition & Registration
Tuition for the course is 450 euros and should be paid in advance. If interested in applying, please download and complete the application form by clicking here. Please indicate which course option is more suitable for you.

Other Courses of interest to TKT candidates:

Certificate Course in TEFL
For those who have not attended any other TEFL methodology but whose level of English is at the appropriate level, it is suggested that you should follow a Certificate Course in TEFL which should prepare you for the components of the TKT assessing knowledge of methods, methodologies, resources, management and lesson planning.

Language Awareness Course for TEFL Teachers
For those who feel the need to improve their level of English, their formal knowledge of the language systems (Grammar, Syntax, Lexis, Phonology and Discourse), a Language Awareness Course for Teachers of English as a Foreign Language is suggested as the first, and most important step towards enhancing their knowledge and proficiency.

So, Which course should you choose?

This is not an easy decision but you may be helped by downloading the TKT Handbook and sample papers from the Cambridge website and attempting all three parts of the test on your own. The answers (key) can be found at the end of the sample test to help you see which parts of the assessment you can already complete successfully and which you might need further training on. You may also ask for an appointment with the Courses Director at CELT, if you feel that we may be able to help you decide on the best course for you.

Please phone or e-mail for an appointment with the Courses Director.

What is TKT?
TKT is a new test about teaching English to speakers of other languages. It aims to increase teachers' confidence and enhance job prospects by focusing on the core teaching knowledge needed by teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners, anywhere in the world. This flexible and accessible award will help you to understand:

  • different methodologies for teaching

  • the 'language of teaching'

  • the ways in which resources can be used

  • the key aspects of lesson planning

  • classroom management methods for different needs.

Who is TKT for?
TKT gives teachers a strong foundation in the core areas of teaching knowledge needed in the English language teaching classroom. It is ideal for all teachers, whatever your background and teaching experience, and is also suitable for people who would like to teach English but do not yet have a teaching position.

There are no formal entry requirements. However, anyone wishing to take TKT is strongly advised to have at least an intermediate level of English - level B1 of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - eg PET, IELTS band score of 4.

After taking TKT, teachers who want to develop their knowledge further can progress to Cambridge ESOL's well-established teaching awards, such as ICELT (In-service Certificate in English Language Teaching) and CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults).

What does TKT involve?
Most teachers are likely to follow a preparation course before taking the test but you can also prepare yourself through your own reading and study, if you prefer.

TKT has three core modules. These can be taken together in one exam session or separately, in any order, over three sessions. Each module consists of a test of 80 objective questions, lasting 80 minutes, which require you to select the correct answer and mark this on a computerised answer sheet.

Module 1 - Language and background to language learning and teaching

  • Describing language and language skills.

  • Background to language learning.

  • Background to language teaching.

Module 2 - Planning lessons and use of resources for language teaching

  • Planning and preparing a lesson or sequence of lessons.

  • Selection and use of resources and materials.

Module 3 - Managing the teaching and learning process

  • Teachers' and learners' language in the classroom.

  • Classroom management.
