CELTA Fully Online

Teacher training and Development

CELTA Fully Online

The COVID-19 pandemic has, in just a few short weeks, managed to change the face of education and to bring remote teaching into the picture. Where teachers used to believe that it would take years for online learning to really take hold, a pandemic has completely changed everything we felt safe and comfortable about in foreign language teaching and in education, in general.

This situation has created a new demand for fully online courses, the Cambridge CELTA being the top course in anyone’s sights.

CELTA Fully Online

In these difficult circumstances and with teachers around the globe being pushed into online classrooms without any prior training, Cambridge English Teaching has gives special permission to run CELTA courses fully online

We have already completed two courses which started offline and in blended mode but were completed with online teaching. Read the blog posts of some of our recent trainees on these courses for an insight into the difficulties as well as the benefits.  This is a great opportunity for all teachers and especially those who cannot travel and would otherwise be unable to follow a CELTA course.

Free Add-on Course on Teaching Languages Online

Candidates for these courses are expected to also follow a free preparatory course on the topic of teaching online. This course will be taught by distance (asynchronously) and aims to familiarise candidates with the tools needed for online teaching.  Teaching assessments on this course will be done online in a Zoom classroom, so it is quite important  that they begin their teaching assessments online with confidence and sufficient know-how about the technical requirements and tools available to online teachers.

Course 1

Fully online part time courses
Our trainees enjoy a mixture of live interactive webinars and self-study material on the Cambridge platform which can be accessed any time of the day or night! Days and times of live sessions and Teaching Practice slots are decided on the basis of our trainees’ needs; for example, our next course will run live/synchronous meetings on Mondays and Tuesdays  p.m. times in Europe (for some of our trainees who work in the mornings) or on a Saturday morning (for those trainees who are only free on Saturday)

  • March 8 – May 14   (PT 8 weeks)
  • May 3 – July 7        (PT 8 weeks)

One morning a week 10:00-15:00 EEST during which our candidates

  • teach and observe others teach real students
  • give and receive feedback
  • plan lessons with tutor supervision.
  • attend progress tutorials

Each candidate will be required to teach 8 such lessons to our adult learners at two different levels, pre-intermediate and upper intermediate.

An additional hourly weekly meeting for tutorials, questions or seminars perceived necessary by the tutors will be arranged at times convenient to the trainees.

Note – The times above are tentative as the teaching depends on student availability at those times. Link to World Clock to check your time zone

Independent work in your own time

The content of the course is delivered asynchronously through the Cambridge online platform and all access and study time will be done whenever a candidate has free time. We estimate an average of 5-6 hours per week; additional hours will be needed when planning a lesson to be taught online. Every week candidates will need to cover an average of 3-4 units.

  • working independently on the course content
  • posting responses to the forums
  • designing lessons or activities alone or in collaboration with other candidates
  • commenting on other trainees’ work and interacting with them

Assignments

Course 2

Fully Online 5-week intensive courses
This is a full time course which follows  the model of the online/blended course we have been offering so far, with the exception that the teaching practices will take place in an online class. This course is highly intensive and candidates are required to teach in a synchronous online platform as well as study specific course units each day on their asynchronous learning platform set up by Cambridge.

  • May 31 – July 2      (FT 5 weeks)
  • June 28 – July 30   (FT 5 weeks)

Assignments

To participate

You will need a reasonably fast connection and a laptop or desktop with a web camera. You will also need a noise-cancelling headset with a microphone (not the one you use for your smartphone). This will allow you to participate and teach with no audio and and video issues. Our online/virtual classroom allows participants audio, video, text chat and screen sharing (standard tools in all live classrooms) as well as other great functionalities, such as dividing students into separate rooms in order to do group work.

Certification and validation

Some candidates often express concern about their certification after completing an online CELTA course as there are countries that do not accept certificates which have been obtained online. Cambridge English Teaching has responded that a CELTA Certificate obtained online has exactly the same recognition and value as the one obtained by attending an in-person courses. In our experience to date, none of our online candidates who have been awarded the CELTA certificate from an online course have ever had problems with employers, however, it would be wise to check if currently employed.

Tuition & Assessment Fees

Tuition for this very special option is 1350 euros plus the usual Cambridge assessment fee of 150 euros. Tuition can be paid in a one-time payment or in three instalments – please email us for more details about the payment schedule.

To check our tuition fees in any currency you wish please visit   XE.com Personal Currency Assistant. Installments are possible – more information via email or at the interview. To our fully Online CELTA candidates, we are offering a mini course within their course to train them up to teach online entirely free of charge.

These extra training hours will be offered free of charge to all applicants. Take advantage of this great opportunity to attend a course taught by experienced online tutors.

I am interested in enrolling in the June course and until travel is permitting to the EU I’ll be in the US ( NY/Miami time zone) so I was curious as to if you think it could work. I am hoping to travel to Greece and Italy later on in the Summer so it should be OK.
In addition to the one class day a week that we will be online, approximately how many hours of work do you expect in addition so I can plan accordingly?
Lastly, one we complete, do you work with students to help find clients or work? I am planning on relocating to Europe permanently either this Fall or right after 1 Jan.
    Thank you
