Module 3 Option 2: English Language Teaching Management (ELTM)



Management Skills are indispensable in language teaching and learning and the effectiveness of these skills directly impacts the quality of language education, the soundness of your language programme and the satisfaction level of both students and faculty in the language classroom

Course Organisation

moodleThe course is delivered via  Moodle, an asynchronous LMS (Learning Management System), which means that you will be able to log in  and complete your coursework whenever you can. There is no set timetable for this although it is expected that you will need to put in a total of of at least 50-60 hours of individual work to complete tasks set by your course leader and to write up your Module 3 extended assignment.

N.B. During the course, your course leader will invite you to a number of short live  meetings in our online webinar room to keep in touch and connect with other colleagues following the programme.

How the course will benefit you

The purpose of this 30-hour programme is to provide educational management skills training for acting or prospective managers of foreign language institutions, senior teachers who are, or will soon be, in positions of responsibility. Here’s what this course will do for you:

This is a great course which opens a good number of career opportunities to Delta holders  interested in developing their career as administrators, or who run their own Language Teaching Operation already.
It’s also a course you can do even before you have done the other two Delta Modules as its content is independent of the main Module 1 & 2 syllabuses.
A caution – to attend the course you must be in a position to access data from a Language Teaching Operation related to your focus area. 

What you can expect to learn on this course



1. Research into specialist areas
  • Present an informed discussion of the context and needs of learners in their selected specialism.
  • Summarise the principles and theories of teaching which are specific to the selected specialism.
  • Apply knowledge and understanding of the selected specialist area to plan for and assess learners in the chosen specialism.
2. Syllabus design: principles, influences on, methodological effects of, and major syllabus types as applied to the specific learning context
  • Critically evaluate approaches to syllabus design, including their theoretical base, in relation to the broader curriculum and to the specific learning/teaching context selected by the candidate.
  • Evaluate and critically assess the influence of major theories of second language acquisition on the design of major types of syllabus in ELT and their influence on course provision.
  • Select and develop criteria for judging the suitability of different types of syllabus for stated teaching and the specific learning context.
  • Describe the influence of syllabus design on English Language Teaching (ELT) methodology.
3. Designing syllabus and teaching programmes to meet the needs of learners in the specific context of their selected specialism
  • Design and plan the implementation of syllabuses and courses for a stated teaching context and group of learners.
  • Critically evaluate, adapt, design and conduct a variety of needs analyses to inform syllabus and teaching programmes.
4. Course design and development in the specific context of their selected specialism
  • Apply knowledge of needs analysis and syllabus design to designing a course for a selected group of learners.
  • Prepare a scheme of work based on the course outlined. • Select or outline appropriate materials for the course.
5. The principles and practice of testing and assessment and application to the candidate’s specialist area
  • Describe and explain major principles involved in testing, test design, and different types of assessment.
  • Apply these principles to the planning and/or design and use of assessment schemes, methods and instruments that are fair, valid, reliable, sufficient and appropriate for specific learners, using ICT where appropriate.
  • Select, adapt and create valid classroom tests and other forms of informal assessment appropriately.
  • Evaluate and interpret the results of classroom tests ppropriately.
6. Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness and quality of courses and programmes of study
  • Select, adapt and create appropriate assessment tools (including formal tests and exams) and methods in order to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness and quality of courses and programmes of study.

Module 3 assignment Support 

Assignments for Module 3 are 4,500 words in length and must be submitted to the centre in their final draft form before the end of May or November each year in electronic form. All details about the assignment can be found in the handbooks linked in the previous paragraph.

The extended assignment can focus on one of the following specialisms listed below:

  1. Academic Management
  2. Human Resources Management (HRM)
  3. Customer Service
  4. Marketing

The centre uploads assignments to the Cambridge ESOL website.

Requirements – Who can take this course

A course specifically addressed to acting or prospective managers who would like to learn more about running a Language Teaching Operation and at the same time acquire a prestigious Cambridge Delta Certificate on this topic.
To attend the course you must be in a position to access data from a Language Teaching Operation related to your focus area and you must be have a level of education that would allow  you to follow the related readings and produce an academic assignment.

Follow the course as an independent candidate or as part of your Delta Diploma

No special equipment is necessary to follow the course on Moodle and candidates do not need to download any programmes.  They are required to participate in webinars their tutor organises and for this a fast internet connection and a headset are needed – a webcam is not obligatory but desirable as it enhances contact amongst participants and course tutor.

Candidates for this specialism will be given access to the CELT Athens DELTA wiki where they will be able to find some related reading  but they should also be prepared to purchase some books themselves, especially if they do not have access to the CELT Athens library.

Application procedure

Please download and complete the Delta ELTM Application  and return to  giving as much detail as possible about your experience, duties and responsibilities.
Apart from personal details, you are required to write a short piece about your work and your views on management.

Dates & Tuition

The course is offered, on average,  three times a year with start dates in early September, February or April and July.  Tuition is 600 euros and Cambridge assessment fees cost another 110 euros payable to our centre near the time of project submission.
N.B. Internal Delta candidates who have opted for integrated course are entitled to a 50% discount on the tuition of this course.  
Once you have applied and  paid for your tuition fees, you will be registered and given a course key to enter the Moodle course website and follow your course using your user name and password.
