CELTA Fully Online

Teacher training and Development

CELTA – Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

The gold standard teaching qualification

There is no other teaching certificate mentioned as much the Cambridge CELTA in all the job postings on the web. The course leading to this Teaching Award is taken annually by more than 10,000 teachers worldwide – some are completely new to the profession and some seek it as proof of training even though they may be quite experienced. Read all about it below and find out how you, too can obtain it at our centre. Fact: Three out of four English language teaching job adverts explicitly ask for a CELTA qualification.

Here is why

  • All CELTA courses include Teaching Practice, one of the reasons why they are so well respected. All candidates teach 8-9 lessons with multilingual classes of adult learners at two different levels.
  • The course is delivered by a Cambridge Authorised Centre and taught by approved tutors who have appropriate training qualifications and experience
  • Each and every course is quality controlled, inspected and moderated by Cambridge appointed assessors.

Why you should do your CELTA with us!

CELT Athens is an Authorised Cambridge Teaching Awards Centre and has been running TEFL courses from Certificate to Diploma level courses since 1989. Since then we have trained more than 4000 teachers in the private and public sector.

The content of fully online courses is delivered asynchronously through the Cambridge online platform and all access and study time will be done whenever a candidate has free time.  The days and times of interactive sessions may be adjusted to the needs of different groups of trainees in different time zones but they are usually 6-7 hours long, a full morning afternoon or evening. Attendance to these live sessions is required.

During the live Zoom Meetings candidates...

… teach and observe others teach real students
… give and receive feedback about lessons taught or seen
… plan lessons with tutor supervision.
… attend progress tutorials in groups or individually
… attend interactive seminars and workshops

Timetables

Online courses can be followed in part time mode over 10 weeks or in intensive mode over 6 weeks.

10-week course:  Live sessions are on one full day a week  a.m. or p.m.   (for approximately 6-7 hours each time)

6-week course:  Live sessions are on two full days a week  a.m. or p.m.   (for approximately 5 hours each time) for the following.

Here is what a typical day on the course is  like (subject to change depending on number of trainees):

09:00-11:00    Teaching Practices
11:00-11:15       Coffee Break
11:15-12:15       Feedback to Lessons
12:30-13:30     Supported Lesson Planning
14:00-15:00     Online Live Seminar

Workload

10-week course: This is a great option even if you are teaching although it does require setting time aside for study. We estimate an average of about 10 hours working independently on the course content, plus additional hours lesson planning and assignment writing. The days and times of these live, interactive sessions are adjusted to the needs of different groups of trainees in different time zones.

Candidates must study the course content on the Cambridge platform outside online contact time with tutor and students any time or day of the week they have available; they will be required to cover between 3-5 units every week and complete four short assignments during the course.

6-week course:  This is a great option if you are not yet teaching or, if you are, you should choose it if you have a very light teaching schedule. We estimate an average of about 10 hours working independently on the course content, plus additional hours lesson planning and assignment writing. The 6-week course can be quite demanding and it is difficult to follow if you are also working. you will need to set a minimum of about 25 hours per week for attendance, study and lesson planning.

To participate

You will need a reasonably fast connection and a laptop or desktop with a web camera. You will also need a noise-cancelling headset with a microphone (not the one you use for your smartphone). This will allow you to participate and teach with no audio and and video issues. Our online/virtual classroom allows participants audio, video, text chat and screen sharing (standard tools in all live classrooms) as well as other great functionalities, such as dividing students into separate rooms in order to do group work.

Timetable

Attendance is every day during weekdays (Monday to Friday); it is an all-day attendance course, usually from 09:00 – 17:00. Here is what a typical day on the intensive CELTA is like:

09:00-11:00     Teaching Practices
11:00-11:30     Coffee Break
11:30-12:30     Feedback to Lessons
12:30-13:30     Supported Lesson Planning

They are about 1000 words each and focus on Identifying Learner Needs, Grammar & Vocabulary, Reading or Listening and Professional Development after the course.

It is a heavy workload but if you love the fully immersive nature of an intensive course like this, you will reap great benefits!!! Candidates for this option should be free from work obligations and able to commit fully to completing their course.

About the Blended & Mixed Mode CELTA

The blended and mixed mode course options have been introduced as alternatives for those candidates who want to attend online but want to do some or all of their teaching assessments with offline classes. There are two options available and both involve spending from 2-4 weeks in Athens.

1/ Blended mode course - all teaching practices in Athens

The course content is delivered fully online, synchronously* or asynchronously** but the teaching practices are all done face-to-face over a short period (for example over 2 or 3 weeks) or, if the course is  part time, over a longer stretch (for example over 8 – 10 weeks). This course delivery mode is ideal for working teachers who are comfortable learning online but want to experience teaching in face-to-face situations as this suits their local working prospects better.

2/ Mixed mode course - half the teaching practices in Athens

This means that the course content is delivered fully online, live (synchronously*) or  in self-paced mode (asynchronously** ).

Half the teaching practice lessons (4 in number) are taught  face-to-face over a short period (for example over 2 weeks)

The other half are taught online, on ZoomIn this way, candidates experience both types of teaching, offline and online.

N.B. Both course delivery options are usually described as blended or hybrid, but Cambridge has introduced the term mixed mode to describe the two different practice teaching options.

How the Courses Work

Interactive meetings on Zoom are held usually on one full morning or afternoon a week on 10-week courses during the online part of the course. During the face-to face part of the course, sessions may take place twice a week (mixed courses) or four days a week (blended courses)

During the live Zoom Meetings candidates...

… teach and observe others teach real students
… give and receive feedback about lessons taught or seen
… plan lessons with tutor supervision.
… attend progress tutorials in groups or individually

How to get accepted

Many candidates worry that they do not know anything about teaching but they really should not.  The CELTA course is a pre-service course intended for teachers who have no teaching experience but even experienced teachers find it extremely useful and rewarding.

Ideally you should:

  • have a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education
  • be aged 18 or over
  • have a standard of English which will enable you to teach a range of levels including advanced classes
  • You may still be accepted if you do not have formal qualifications at this level but can demonstrate that you would be likely to complete the course successfully.

Your standard of English should be C1 or higher in oder to help you do well on the course as you will be required to teach both higher and lower levels in your teaching assessments.

If you do not know your level, do take our free placement test here, then write to us to let  us know so we can give you your results. Both native and non-native speakers are accepted on the course and both are expected to have a level of education, language awareness and competence in English which will enable them to deal with all aspects of the assessment in a successful way.

Follow these instructions to apply:

  1. Download our CELTA_application_online and return completed to info@celt.edu.gr
  2. Complete the pre-interview task, a short language assessment which we will send you
  3. Email your answers to info@celt.edu.gr
  4. Arrange a date and time when you can attend an online interview with a course tutor.
  5. If accepted, pay in your deposit to confirm your place, and begin your pre-course preparation tasks given to you by the centre.

If you would like to learn more about what we look for in your pre-course assessment, please read this blog post written by our Director and CELTA & DELTA Course Tutor, Marisa Constantinides.

To get accepted and do well on the CELTA course, you need a good level of English; Cambridge specifies a minimum of C1 (CEFR) or a 7 and above IELTS score. Read the blog post below explaining what we look for in a candidate so you can prepare effectively and do well.

  • You can study on your own or take a course. The results of solitary/individual work vary; some individuals may do well, others may benefit by attending a course.
  • The Cambridge free CELTA Preparation Course. This is a free course created by Cambridge and it is highly recommended. Complete the three modules below and get fully prepared.
    1. CELTA Preparation Module 1: Introduction to the CELTA Course
    2. CELTA Preparation Module 2: Introduction to Language Teaching and Learning
    3. CELTA Preparation Module 3: Introduction to Language Awareness
  • Language Awareness Course for ELT Teachers - this is a course suited to teachers whose level of English is B2 or lower.
  • Grammar for Teachers Course. - this is a course suited to teachers who want to become teachers of English but have no formal knowledge of grammar, either because they are native speakers who were never taught grammar at school, or whose  studies did not include this subject.

What you can do for your tech skills

Whether you are registering for an online or blended/mixed-mode course,or for a face-to-face course, technology is here to stay and help TEFL teachers do a better job.
